Turkey confiscated at the airport

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Please let me voice my disappointment of having my Butterball turkey fully cooked, frozen and plastic sealed taken from me at the airport. I was told I needed a permit, which is not something that is on their tourist website. But, regardless of all of that, this was one turkey, not 10 or 20, for my family’s personal consumption.

I am a person with many handicaps. One is not being able to use my hands for a long period of time or stand for long periods. This was not cooked by me. It was done by a main grocery store that made an entire Christmas dinner. I then requested to fill a permit form at the airport and was refused.

To make matters more complicated, the phone number I was given by the agent, to get some clarity on the situation, was incorrect. I had to call five different places before I was given the absurd reason for them taking my turkey. The United States has one of the highest hygiene and safety standards when it comes to its foods. I have also taken COOKED food back and forth for years. I do truly believe that my family’s turkey was meant for someone else.

I hope they enjoy it and have themselves a very Merry Christmas.
