THE EDITOR, Madam:

Thanks to Lester Hinds and The Gleaner for the article on Byron LaBeach, who departed this life on December 12 at the age of 91.

We have rarely heard of a fifth member of the 4 x 400 team in Helsinki (1952). But that stands to reason. There must have been back-up, but we almost never hear of this fifth member.

I vaguely recall a LaBeach who was associated with track at St Jago High School in the 1960s. I don’t know if it was him.

What pleases me about the article is that LaBeach lived to a ripe old age. He was married for 57 years and was a devoted family man who was involved in his community. He is an example to all Jamaican males.
