Consider leasing Vale Royal to business interests

Serious consideration should be given by Prime Minister Andrew Holness and the Government of Jamaica to leasing Vale Royal to a private entity or to a local businessperson to operate the historic property as an enterprise similar to that of Devon House. Given its prime location, beautiful Georgian architecture, large and lush grounds, and amenities, such as tennis courts and a pool, such a venture would be a natural fit.

Shops could be built, in the same architectural style as Vale Royal House, to facilitate craft shops, restaurants, a spa, etc, in like manner to how the grounds at Devon House are utilised.

Vale Royal should not be turned into a museum and/or as a place to host visiting dignitaries. Were that to happen, it would continue to be a financial burden on the already- overburdened government coffers.

The Government, at present, leases to private interests prime properties the country owns, including Fort Clarence and Puerto Seco beaches, Hope Gardens, and the nation’s two biggest airports, namely, the Norman Manley International and the Sangster International.

Last, giving new life to and transforming Vale Royal into yet another prime recreational space in Kingston, where Jamaicans and visitors to the island can relax, socialise, shop, eat good food, and enjoy themselves, is exactly what the Vale Royal property should become. Such a move would be a win-win for all parties concerned.
