Highs and lows of Reggae Marathon
THE EDITOR, Madam:
On December 4, the Reggae Marathon was staged in Negril. There were many takeaways from this event, it was well organised, there were signs and banners placed strategically, also refreshments and drinks were being handed out to the participants by these sponsors. Police and first aid response teams were out in their numbers to assist.
There was music and different items on display, Bob Marley’s songs were being played, which were a hit.
Though the event posed inconvenience for the locals, and it was difficult to go from point A to point B. In my opinion, the organisers didn’t put as much preparation in place locals who had to reach work, conduct businesses or to get home. People were seen walking from Beach Park to Long Bay and elsewhere in order to get a bus. I think the fact that locals provide services to those who come from all over the world to participate in the marathon, adequate preparation should have been put in place. There are workers who travel from as far as Montego Bay to work.
I am not disputing the tremendous benefits that event brings, but the organisers should take the convenience of the local population into consideration. Maybe the workers can be taken in chartered buses to prevent them from walking long distances.
