We need accountable and better governance

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I find it interesting, and saddening, that in this country, our citizens fail (or don’t care) to look past symptoms. The most popular symptom is, of course, crime. Corruption and general indiscipline seem not to be recognised as offsprings of the same root cause i.e., poor parenting, which results from poor basic education.

Unfortunately, it seems that if they do recognise it, our politicians, and the people we pay to manage this beautiful country, choose not to highlight this problem when they are standing on the political platform. It seems that they dare not ruffle the feathers of the masses, whose votes they so desperately want.

Besides that, it is convenient for our paid managers (the ones in power, and the ones who are seeking power) to keep things as they are, without rocking the boat. After all, it is their die-hards (usually less educated, ‘eat a food now’) followers whose safe votes they can rely on.

Sadly, those aspiring politicians (usually the younger ones) who dare to hold fast to a long-term, uplifting vision for this country, usually get sidelined and frustrated by the ‘established’ ones, and the present system.

It is time for those of us who see the potential for Jamaica to become more civilised, to demand better governance by our paid managers – the governing politicians. We need to insist that they focus on the root cause.

The cause-and-effect process is as follows: high-quality basic education, better parenting, disciplined civilised citizens, accountable, high-quality leadership and governance, a developed country and citizens.
