The Pelé Stadia

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am hoping that it was not an emotional comment that FIFA President Giovanni Vincenzo Infantino made when he said all countries would be asked to name a stadium in honour of the legend and greatest footballer to walk the face of the earth.

Indeed, this pronouncement would help in the reduction of racism within football and other sports. Can you imagine a stadium in Argentina with both the name and picture of Pelé gracing its entrance, and important information about him within its walls?

I hope that FIFA further request that the selected stadiums also host some qualifying matches for the World Cup, too, just to make sure that the countries do not select some ‘back-a-wall’ venues, as I am sure some of these political hacks will do.

Many people will not know this, but Pelé’s mother is still alive and celebrated her 100th birthday last November. I am almost certain that such a famous fruit from her womb is being celebrated worldwide and will continue to be the standard of excellence when any human being plays this beautiful game.
