Hasten referendum on Constitution reforms

Published:Saturday | March 4, 2023 | 12:12 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

This is an appeal to our policymakers, although the greater segment of our constitution had out-lived its relevance it does not give any of the elected servants of this country the salient rights to continue the imposition of self on our brothers and sisters. Choosing of a custos which is a bit outdated, for the time being, the people of the respective parishes should be given the opportunity and/or chance to identify themselves with someone. Becoming wealthy do not qualify one to become custos or to hold any public office, the source in which it came for example

(a) One who peddles cocaine and other harsh drugs which destroys one’s health

(b) One who use the less-fortunate to take lives and other destructive things to facilitate their ego.

They will eventually pay for their damages because the mercies will cease and His judgment will come. We have noticed that many of our leaders had part of this life in a very un-Christ like manner, so let us desist from believing that we will escape.

I beg of you all to hasten the process of a national referendum reflecting the full participation of all elegible Jamaicans to determine a new constitution that will choose an autonomous president and vice president, an elected upper and lower house and the nomination of Jamaicans here and in the diaspora with the relevant competence and/or expertise to manage the day-to-day affairs of the country. The names of those offices can be determined by the Jamaican voters, this would prevent the abuse of power.

The elected people for the upper and lower houses would meet and direct the policies, and also would have ample time to see to their personal business.

Trusting that these few words will send a message.
