THE EDITOR, Madam:

As a Jamaican born before Independence and grown up through the school system in Jamaica, I am totally disappointed in what Jamaica has become. Knowing the level of education and skill that is produced out of our little island and seeing this being stifled and disrespected because of political expediency, I am disappointed. An island only 4,411 square miles with people who think ourselves so important, it’s a shame we can’t figure out a governing system for ourselves, rather than following or being told what to do. If, within this new Constitution, the people are still going to be told how it ‘guh’, this will all be an exercise in futility.

With the disregard for the fundamental rights of the people and the growth of the country’s pillars, the society has become fractured. The brain drain has been conveniently used by the political elite to keep hold on to the power and the spoils. While revealing their indifference and true purpose the country burns. This brain drain is not new and has been around way before Independence. But, as self-governance grew, you would have thought it would have been more conducive to self-determination. However, as we see people, especially anyone with skills and ambition, finding themselves unable to move forward and provide for family, given the chance, they will leave the country for brighter prospects.

I ask what is the big deal in coming to a consensus over a new Constitution that everyone wants? How will it really benefit the people of Jamaica? If the ultimate purpose is for every Jamaican, wouldn’t it be best that we, the Jamaican people, are the ones that vote for each and every politically appointed position without regards to party politics?

They could still keep their political parties but give the people the true power to appoint who we see fit to represent us. Don’t turn this Constitution into something that will further alienate and subjugate us for political and corporate greed.
