What will be different in 2024 for Jamaica?

THE EDITOR, Madam:

We are in 2024 and my question to my fellow Jamaicans is, what sort of Jamaica are we expecting? Last year, in my opinion, was one of the worse that I have seen. Crime escalated; murders and domestic violence were alarmingly high; health and education sectors were in a debacle; communities are overrun by the young being a menace and a nuisance, causing a decrease in moral standards; overall, a shamble of what our forefathers have fought against so that we are no longer enslaved.

While I am not questioning the current administration, it is important that they come up with strategies to fight the problems. There is urgent need to hold each member of the Cabinet accountable.

The Opposition should use their voice to bring matters of importance to the forefront, so that the public and the Government can feel their impact. Be their shadow so that they know that their shenanigans are no longer accepted and will not work. I have not seen or heard a strong voice by the Opposition. They need to shape up.

The government agencies and the private sector need to rise above partisan politics and work towards the betterment of the country. The police force is a prime example; are they meeting the needs of the nation? The statistics on crime can easily answer that. The erection of the many high-rise buildings is not a manifestation of accomplishment, but rather, a representation of misguided priority, because who will be able to afford them? Countries are still advising their citizens to be careful when they visit Jamaica, our image is still questionable. Innocent citizens are still dying like flies, and there are either delays or closure to their cases.

We need to clamour for changes. Jamaicans need to bond together with one voice to ensure that we have a better year ahead.
