Rev Thwaites’ powerful views
THE EDITOR, Madam:
One of my favourite columnists across all media platforms is Ronald Thwaites. An attorney-at-law, former radio and talk show host, former minister of government and member of parliament, Thwaites is also an astute businessman and a deacon who is well rounded and articulate. He tells it like it is, without being rude or crude.
Thwaites’ recent column, ‘The cruel use of power’ (April 1, 2024), pretty much summed up the ongoing saga with the Speaker of the House Juliet Holness, and more specifically, the unfortunate letter of reprimand written to the Clerk to the Houses of Parliament Valrie Curtis.
Ms Curtis, a veteran in the business with over 30 years of public service, is days away from retirement, we understand. Ms Curtis was accused of “gross dereliction of duty”, which, according to the Speaker, “brought the House into disrepute”.
What could’ve triggered such a nasty letter, which, according to the Speaker, will be placed on her personal file, is beyond what anyone with reasonable cognitive skills could imagine.
I thank Rev Thwaites for sharply focusing on issues that really matter to trigger thought as we learn how to evolve into a more civil and productive society.
I don’t think Rev Thwaites gets enough credit for his brilliant articles and it is hoped that he will continue sharing his views with the media and the public for as long as it is possible.
