Engage Bureau of Standards to monitor ATM operations

THE EDITOR, Madam:

In addition to the new measures laid out by the Bank of Jamaica to ensure that the country’s seven major commercial banks significantly improve their automated banking machines/ automated teller machines (ABM/ATM) operations, another layer could be implemented that would further stimulate the banks to improve the quality control and management of their ABM/ATM operations and, also, increase customer confidence in ABM/ATM machines.

It seems to me that the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ) could be mandated by the Government of Jamaica to monitor the ABM/ATM machines across the island. If implemented, this policy and practice would be similar to how the BSJ currently monitors and tests the gas station pumps. Once everything is found in proper functioning order and up to the prescribed standards, the gas stations are awarded the much-sought-after ISO certifications.

The primary role and function of the BSJ, after all, is to ensure that Jamaican citizens are receiving goods and services that meet international standards.
