How long must teachers wait to be treated fairly?

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I write on behalf of myself and countless other educators who continue to be treated with disregard and disrespect by the Ministry of Education and Region One Office in Kingston.

Since June 2024, I have been waiting for the processing of my upgraded salary and retroactive pay after completing my bachelor’s degree in education. Despite having submitted all required documentation and receiving email confirmation on two separate occasions that my file had been forwarded to the Region Office for sign-off, I am yet to receive any payment. What is even more disheartening is that I have been told that no timeline can be given for when this signing will be completed.

As an educator who has made the effort to upgrade my qualifications, I find this unacceptable and emotionally draining. I have also contacted a JTA representative, who has confirmed that he is awaiting word from the relevant salary officers. The silence and delays only add to the growing frustration.

Teachers are the backbone of this nation’s future, and it is disheartening that we must constantly fight to be fairly compensated for the work we do and the qualifications we’ve earned. This is not just an administrative issue – it’s a matter of respect and justice.

I call on the Ministry of Education, the Salaries Division, and the Region One Office to respond with urgency, accountability, and transparency. How long must teachers wait to be treated fairly?
