Letter of the Day | Not just celebrations, we need to work our way to progress
THE EDITOR, Madam:
Come August 1 and 6, Jamaica will be in full celebration mode. Emancipation Day, Independence Day, festival songs on the radio. Black, green, and gold on every street corner, Miss Jamaica Festival Queen crowned, Speeches about culture and pride. Diaspora returning home to feel the vibe, we’ll celebrate 63 years of independence.
But what exactly are we celebrating?
Because wearing our national colours and waving flags for a week won’t fix what’s broken. Patriotism is not about vibes. It’s about responsibility. It’s about demanding more – of ourselves, and of our government.
True love for Jamaica means not dumping garbage in the streets. It means not walking past piles of trash like we don’t see them. It means the government provides enough bins and actually empties them. It means citizens stop littering like it’s someone else’s job.
Real pride means raising a generation that doesn’t explode at every disagreement, where every ‘disrespect’ isn’t met with violence. Why have we normalised rage and retaliation? We need to teach conflict resolution, self-control, and emotional maturity from early – at home and in schools.
Loving Jamaica means no more shielding scammers and gunmen just because “dem a help out di family.” That ‘help’ comes at the cost of a nation bleeding. Safety shouldn’t be a luxury for tourists – it should be the standard for every Jamaican.
Patriotism means fixing outdated laws that choke small businesses and push honest people to hustle in the margins. It means finally building a national fingerprint and DNA database to solve crimes and prevent others. What are we waiting for?
It means taking pride in our homes, yards, and communities – not tearing down beautification projects or stealing plants from public spaces. It means respecting each other’s effort and looking out for the place we all call home.
And above all, it means protecting the land itself. We can’t keep destroying our environment for short-term gain. Mining Bengal Mountain? Tearing down the Cockpit Country? That’s not development – it’s destruction. We must defend our natural heritage before it’s too late.
We cannot continue to be pacified by music and marching bands while the country struggles underneath. And we must stop allowing politicians to sweet-talk us with empty promises every election cycle.
Wave your flags this Emancipendence, sing the songs, wear the colours. But also pick up the work. If we truly love Jamaica, we don’t wait until August 6 passes.
