MEDICAL DOCTOR and entrepreneur David Walcott has been named among the first class of 11 Healthcare Innovation Fellows by one of the world’s largest healthcare innovation group – Rock Health. Walcott has been invited to the group’s Health Summit Innovation Conference happening in San Francisco, USA, on September 14.

Walcott, who was the team physician for the recently concluded U20 World Championships, already has several accolades to his name as an outstanding scholar and business leader, having been recognised by numerous international health organisations for his exceptional work in healthcare innovation.

“I am honoured to be recognised and awarded as a Rock Health Innovation Fellow, and stand proudly with other global healthcare leaders who are driving healthcare innovation at exceptional scales,” Walcott said.

According to Rock Health’s website, its Rock Health Summit Innovation Fellows programme “supports emerging leaders and dynamic thinkers and doers who are committed to solving for equity and inclusion in digital health through engagement with the Rock Health Summit”. The healthcare organisation noted that the class represents “a brilliant cohort of fellows who reflect a broad range of racial, gender, and geographic identities alongside their various areas of expertise in digital health”.

“This experience will certainly help me to expand my leadership in the digital healthcare ecosystem, as well as bring back a greater level of expertise and knowledge that will benefit Jamaica and the wider Caribbean region through the work done by our company, NovaMed,” said Walcott.

Walcott shared that through this fellowship programme, entrepreneurs will have access to Rock Health’s vast network of healthcare partners and innovative leaders in the digital health and health innovation ecosystem. “They also provide funding and support to entrepreneurs working at the intersection of healthcare and technology, and as a fellow, I will have access to opportunities to engage, mentor and invest in their global portfolio.”

NovaMed is Walcott’s healthcare innovation company with a mandate to bring First-World healthcare solutions to emerging markets. NovaMed has been actively problem-solving within the Caribbean with stakeholder relationships spanning academic organisations, governmental authorities and industries in over 40 different countries. The company has also collated best practices and global insights that are actioned through its portfolio companies in healthcare, advisory, consulting, medical education and health technology services.

“My hope is to make healthcare significantly better for every human being, and support the modernisation and acceleration of healthcare innovation across emerging markets,” said Walcott.
