Held annually since its founding in 1770, the Saint George’s Society English Ball on Tuesday recognised Jamaican, Paula Kerr-Jarrett Wegman, with the Commonwealth Award; hotelier, Sir Rocco Forte, with a medal honour, and one of its own, John Shannon, with the Order of St George’s Society, at a black-tie event at The Pierre in New York City. One of America’s oldest charities, it devotes over $1 million annually to help people in need across New York’s boroughs. The organisation’s work addresses some of society’s biggest challenges, from poverty and isolation to access to education.
