Andrea Dempster Chung to receive 2023 Stella Gregory Award

The Soroptimist International Club of Jamaica (Kingston) has named co-founder and executive director of Kingston Creative, Andrea Dempster Chung, as the 2023 recipient of its annual Stella Gregory Award. The award is presented annually to an outstanding woman, who has excelled in her chosen field and has contributed to national development.

Dempster Chung is being recognised for her outstanding and pioneering leadership of Kingston Creative, an NGO that uses art to achieve social and economic transformation. Kingston Creative is helping to open up access to new economic opportunities for creatives, and transforming downtown Kingston through promotion of the arts and development of its creative economy.

Upon receiving the news, Dempster Chung expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Soroptimist Club, sharing her delight to accept the award and attend the event.

Dempster Chung is widely recognised for her design of the Art District and social and economic transformation programme for downtown Kingston. She founded the Bookophilia Bookstore & Cafe, an independent establishment that advocates for Caribbean writers and literature while organising various arts and literary events. Additionally, she serves on the board of the Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust (JCDT) and on two international advisory boards: the Global Creative Economy Council and the Global Cultural Districts Network.

She formerly directed the Arts portfolio at the British Council in Jamaica, overseeing strategy and programme implementation and have served on the boards of the Jamaica Social Investment Fund, The National Land Agency, and the Public Health Committee of Jamaica.

Andrea Dempster Chung holds a master of science in structural engineering and a bachelor of science in civil and environmental engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. She has studied art and finance at the Sotheby’s School of Art in London and finance at Stanford Business School in California. She is a certified Prince two project manager and was recognised by Forbes Magazine as one of the 10 women driving the push for a sustainable future for Jamaica.

The award will be presented during the club’s Charter Anniversary Luncheon and Stella Gregory Awards Ceremony on Saturday, November 25th at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel at 12:30 p.m.
