Dream House | Nigerian Pius Reis’ hidden Whitehouse gem
Appearances can be deceiving, for things are not always what they seem. Take this delightful home on the south coast, for example.
Its frontage at street level has judiciously plotted with the physical features of the surrounding hillside, giving the distinct perception that it’s a smallish, one-level abode. In actuality, its really a massive three-level structure stepping mightily down the steep slope, beholding the bluish-green seawater seemingly within reach.
The over 10,000-square-foot expanse on two-thirds of an acre accounts for an all embracing nine bedrooms (some with balconies), nine bathrooms; a powder room; formal and informal timber tray ceiling living and dining areas; with a sliding glass door, covered outdoor areas; and an island kitchen (with seating), highlighting Corian brand solid surface counters.
Augmenting all this is the resuscitating in-pool hot spa outdoors, a barbecue grill, a salt water pool with its health benefits, along with a thatched-roofed gazebo and bar. Lush, fruited gardens are in full view, twinned with mosaic-tiled walkways.
The colouration employed, both inside and out, is off white. Interiors are professionally curated, with furniture purchased locally and shipped in.
Pius Reis, 66 years old, was born in Nigeria, and left his country at age 23 for America, ending up with a master’s degree in economics. He vacationed on the island 22 years ago and, the moment he landed off the plane, he felt at home and at peace with himself. Here reminded him of where he grew up in Nigeria. Captivated, he kept returning, again and again until he eventually saw the light. He had to retire in Jamaica - there was no going back!
In 2018, after searching far and wide without success, he felicitously found this house built in 2006, in the gated neighbourhood of Colloden, Whitehouse, Westmoreland. He was blown away by its view. It was way out of his means of affordability but the hand of fate played its part in its purchase. Reis is a homely person, and enjoys the comforts of being all day in his temple of seclusion, free from all unnecessary interference.
Today, there are no regrets in having moved for evermore from Minnesota, USA, to Jamaica, for Pius Reis. We wish him well in his island home, and his new lease on life.
