GoodHeart | Tanya Hylton balances the grid, motherhood with grace
Tanya Hylton, a transmission and distribution engineer at Jamaica Public Service (JPS), has managed to balance the demands of a high-stakes technical career with the joys and responsibilities of motherhood. For the past nine years, she has carved out her space in the energy sector, helping to maintain the grid that powers homes, businesses, and communities across Jamaica. But when the safety gear comes off, her focus shifts to a different role, being mom to her six-year-old daughter, Raegan.
“Motherhood is full of little moments that mean everything,” Hylton shared. “Helping with homework, talking about her day, hearing her laugh ... those are the things that really stay with me.”
Raised in Clapham and Moneague, St Ann, she was brought up by her mother and great-grandmother, women who led with patience, love, and quiet strength. Their example continues to shape how she approaches both life and parenting.
“I remember the security I felt growing up, just knowing I was cared for and supported. That’s the same feeling I want Raegan to have.”
At JPS, Hylton plays a vital role in ensuring the reliable flow of electricity across the island. She has a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Technology and is a certified project management professional. Her career reflects both technical excellence and a commitment to service.
“There’s real fulfilment in knowing that what we do affects the entire country,” she said. “It’s not just about keeping the lights on. It’s about connection, stability, and progress.”
Balancing career and motherhood isn’t always easy. Work deadlines, school events, and everyday responsibilities often compete for her time and energy. Still, with careful planning, strong faith, and a reliable support system, Hylton finds her rhythm day by day.
“Some days are tough, but I’ve learned to be kind to myself and to keep my priorities clear. My daughter comes first.”
Her faith remains her anchor. She draws strength from Philippians 4:13 “ I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” especially on days that feel overwhelming.
She also credits the people around her for making it all possible. From Raegan’s father, and her own mother, to friends and neighbours, and the family’s long-time helper, who has been by their side for over five years. It’s a village effort, and Tanya doesn’t take that for granted.
“I couldn’t do it alone,” she added.
As she looks to the future, Hylton is focused on continued growth, both professionally and personally. But her greatest hope is for Raegan to grow up feeling empowered, confident, and deeply loved.
“I want her to believe she can do anything, and to know her mother was always there, showing up every step of the way.”
