Teachers and students at the Farm Primary and Junior High School in St James celebrated Literacy Day in January with the launch of the 'Drop Everything And Read' (DEAR) programme. The initiative is sponsored by First Global Bank (FGB) and aims to have students reading for at least 30 minutes daily.
"We are trying to improve on what we already started with the 'Music, Perfect-Pitch for a Sound Education Programme' introduced to the school by our bank in September of last year," said Ricardo Christie, business development officer at FGB -Montego Bay branch.
DEAR complements a similar school programme titled Uninterrupted Silence Sustained Reading (USSR) that was also in full effect at the launch.
