Be fair while using your discretion - High Command to Police

The Police High Command has issued a reminder to members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) urging them to be fair in using their discretion while on duty.
The reminder was issued in the latest Force Orders released on the weekend.
The High Command says JCF members are required to make decisions based on the set of circumstances that confront them in each instance in which they interact with members of the public.
It adds that members are reminded of the need to exercise their discretion in a judicious manner, in the best interest of citizens, their safety and the image of the JCF.
The High Command pointed to the 1990 order which outlined how the police should operate where there are no legal guidelines.
That order stipulated that the police should take a decision that is the least restrictive of the rights of citizens, meets the intention of the law and does not compromise the safety and integrity of the JCF member.
Meanwhile, the High Command is also urging JCF members to improve the quality of their interaction with members of the public.
The High Command says the quality of the interaction of JCF members with the public can help to shape the image of the Force.
It says members of the Force must endeavour, at all time, to adhere to the Police Public Interaction Policy.
