Police remind licensed firearm holders where to leave weapons when travelling

The police are advising licensed firearm holders to be more careful with their weapons to prevent them from being stolen or lost.

In a statement, the police say they have noted that licensed firearm holders have a nonchalant attitude when handling their firearms.

The police say at no time should firearms be left in a motor vehicle or any other unauthorised place as this is considered negligence.

It says in such cases the firearm holder will be prosecuted and the licence revoked.

The statement says a 'gun safe' or 'gun cabinet' is an ideal way to safeguard a firearm and prevent unwanted access.

Firearm holders are reminded that if they have to travel for less than two weeks, the firearm must be taken to a police station for safekeeping.

If the holder is travelling for more than two weeks the firearm should be taken to the Firearm Licensing Authority.
