Digicel to shell out big bucks
Telecommunication giants, Digicel, is to spend $5.7 billion to expand its network. This is in addition to the company's planned US$150 million, (J$17 billion) investment in fibre optic cable to deliver world-class home Internet services to customers across Jamaica.
The $5.7 billion expenditure should result in customers across the country benefiting from a better mobile experience, faster mobile data speeds, more reliable service and greater call clarity.
According to Digicel, the expansion will improve 4G connectivity and increase capacity by 67 per cent.
"We said that we'll put our money where our mouth is - and now we're showing how. Our ... investment in our network will ensure greater capacity for our family of data-hungry customers, meaning no matter where they are, they will be able to stream, share and surf all of their favourite content at lightning fast speeds, using our best value data plans," said Digicel Jamaica CEO, David Butler.
"We want to thank our customers for their support as we continue to work hard to deliver a world class network to meet the growing demand for data. We are proud to boast over one million data customers using the network - a number that represents our rapid growth in this space - and one that far exceeds the global average. This a testament to the best network and best value that our customers have grown to expect from Digicel," added Butler.
