Route Taxi Association questions Roper's comments about illegal taxis and criminal connection
The Route Taxi Association of Jamaica is questioning comments made by chairman of the Jamaica Urban Transit Corporation in today’s edition of The Gleaner.
In that story, Garnett Roper said a significant number of illegal taxis are owned and operated by members of criminal organisations.
According to Roper, the money that is being spent by the public who travel in these illegal taxies is assisting criminals to buy bullets.
However, the President of Route Taxi Association of Jamaica, Sophia Campbell disagrees.
According to her, for the large part, the persons who operate illegal taxis are honest people.
Campbell says if the JUTC chairman has evidence to support his claim, he should submit it to the police so they can act on it.
Meanwhile, Cambpell says she continues to urge owners of illegal taxis to find a way to regularise their vehicles.
