Students at Chetwood Memorial Primary School in Montego Bay, St James, are to receive assistance towards achieving academic excellence through the Bring Up Grades (BUG) programme instituted at the school last Wednesday by the Kiwanis Club of Montego Bay.

The programme, launched under the theme: 'Developing Leaders Through Academic Achievement', is designed to recognise students who raise their grades to an acceptable range from one grading period to the next.

According to club president Delores Clarke, students who are successful in achieving higher grades will be recognised by being placed on the BUG Honour Roll, awarded certificates, pins and other giveaways.

"The Kiwanis Club of Montego Bay will be supporting the programme at the Chetwood Primary School by planning and carrying out BUG recognition events, providing awards and establishing partnerships with local community businesses," Clarke said.

 

PEER COACHING

She indicated that the programme was created for use in a school setting, but that a community group or agency supporting youth could use it to encourage academic achievement.

Senior Education Officer at the Ministry of Education's Region 4 office Cecilia Jackson said that the BUG programme will assist in instilling peer coaching, motivation, discipline, maturity, creativity, cooperation, and team work.

"Rewarding achievements is always a commendable gesture as it can serve to motivate the recipients to strive towards realising their full potential, and for non-achievers to inculcate industry and ambition. This programme is reflective of innovativeness, creativity and ingenuity, and the Ministry of Education pledges partnership for its success," Jackson said.

Principal of Chetwood Vilma Campbell, in endorsing the initiative, commended the Kiwanis Club of Montego Bay for partnering with the school to assist the students.
