Allow schools to charge part of auxiliary fees – principal

The principal of the Mona High School in St Andrew, Keven Jones, wants the government to allow schools to charge a set fee even as the government seems intent on abolishing auxiliary fees come September.

Education Minister Senator Ruel Reid has said with the abolition, the government will increase the subvention for each student from $11,500 to $19,000. 

However, school administrators say their operations will be compromised as the subvention will not be enough to fund their programmes. 

It's why Jones, wants schools to be able to charge a percentage of the subvention the Government will pay for each student.

He says with the abolition of auxiliary fees, schools will have to go begging for support from parents and other stakeholders.

The Opposition and several teacher's groups have expressed concerns about the impending policy to abolish auxiliary fees.
