Opposition says tax plan will have negative ripple effect

The Opposition is charging that the taxes announced by the government will have a negative ripple effect on Jamaicans.

It argues that the government has broken its promise not to impose new taxes while also creating an environment where the poor will be further burdened.

Opposition Member of Parliament Julian Robinson says the increased taxes on fuel will drive up the cost of electricity, food, transportation and other things.

Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller says the tax plan is a bad move.

Simpson Miller says instead of a relief the poor are further constrained.

Meanwhile, opposition spokesman, Peter Bunting, describes the tax plan as regressive.
