Rainforest Seafoods hosted its annual scholarship awards on Thursday, August 18 for children of employees who have achieved academic excellence in the past school year. The seafood company awarded $1.5 million in scholarships and book grants.
The 17 scholarship awardees, who range from GSAT students to those pursuing tertiary education, as well as their parents, were treated to a luncheon at Rainforest's Montego Bay head office.
The event was hosted by CEO Brian Jardim, who reaffirmed the company's continued commitment to investing in educational initiatives. He explained: "This scholarship fund, which has been existence for over a decade, is one of the most important programmes at Rainforest Seafoods and the one that I am personally most proud of.
Guest speaker Aubrey Stewart shared his inspiring journey from humble beginnings to becoming a Prime Minister's Youth Awardee and when he was given the honour to introduce United States President Barack Obama on his visit to the island. Stewart reminded the awardees that in addition to pursuing academic excellence, it is critical that they find ways to contribute to the development of their communities and their country.
