Maxfield Park Primary gets Math Enrichment Programme
The newly reinstated Stocks and Securities Limited (SSL) Foundation aims to enhance the quality of life of youth by empowerment through education. The foundation has officially implemented a math enrichment programme, Math Matters, in alignment with the Ministry of Education's mandate to increase the numeracy rates in Jamaica.
The foundation has adopted Maxfield Park Primary School in Kingston. Some of the students are exposed to violence and poverty, and given their circumstances and the lack of resources at the school, learning is often an issue. The school has one of the lowest numeracy rates in the Corporate Area.
Through Math Matters, the SSL Foundation has signed a five-year sponsorship contract with the school aiming to increase the mastery rate to 85 per cent.
Increasing financial literacy is a very important mandate of SSL, making it important for the foundation to assist in this endeavour because understanding math plays a huge role in being financially literate.
