Protocol signed for handing over criminals to police

The National Security Ministry, the police and the Church have signed an agreement for handing over of suspects, weapons and contraband.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today, with the Jamaica Umbrella Group of Churches representing religious groups.

The MoU sets out the protocols to be followed when a leader of any religious group hands over suspects, illegal weapons or contraband to the security forces.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister of National Security, Robert Montague said the MoU is a demonstration of the commitment of the church and the wider religious community in the fight for a safer Jamaica. 

The need for a protocol was highlighted recently following the conviction of popular clergyman, Reverend Al Miller, for attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Miller was charged after then fugitive Christopher 'Dudus' Coke was found in a sport utility vehicle that was being driven by Miller in 2010.

Miller was fined $1 million or 12 months in prison on his corruption conviction in September.

He has since appealed.
