Police Inspectorate completes probe into prisoner escape in Portmore rape case
The Inspectorate of the Constabulary has now completed its investigation into the escape of an alleged rapist while he was being taken into custody by two policemen of the Waterford Police in Portmore, St Catherine last week.
The head of the Inspectorate of the Constabulary Assistant Commissioner Wray Palmer says a series of recommendations have been made by his office and the Police Commissioner will now determine what actions will be taken.
He would not detail the findings, but said the inspectorate did not receive the full cooperation of the relatives of the 14-year-old victim who witnessed the escape.
Relatives of the victim said the police had reported that the handcuffs were defective.
Meanwhile, ACP Palmer says in the absence of a stipulated policy, no action will be taken against the two policemen for transporting the suspect in the same vehicle as the 14-year-old rape victim.
At the same time, ACP Palmer says the police will have to consider implementing a policy for the transportation of victims and suspects.
