Fund set up for donations to help Irma-affected countries

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie has provided details of the assistance being provided by Jamaica to Caribbean neighbours affected by the deadly Hurricane Irma.

Speaking in Parliament Tuesday afternoon, McKenzie announced the setting up of the 'Jamaica Irma Relief Fund' at the National Commercial Bank to which people can contribute.

McKenzie has pledged to contribute $50,000 to the fund.

He also said a sub-regional coordination centre has been set up in Jamaica.

He says this centre will provide support for damage assessment in the affected islands, secure relief items and provide logistics for transporting these items where needed.
 

McKenzie also said the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management is leading the activities and will, among other things, deploy a team of specialists to carry out damage assessment in the Turks and Caicos and The Bahamas.
