Security Minister downplays reports of rift with Commish

Minister of National Security Robert Montague has downplayed reports of a rift with Police Commissioner George Quallo.

Speaking with journalists following the handing over of pins to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) to mark its 150th anniversary this morning said he remains on the same page with Quallo with both committed to tackling the crime monster.

“There was no hatchet to bury,” said Montague in response to questions from The Gleaner before going into a private meeting with Quallo at the headquarters of the JCF.

According to Montague the brief meeting would look at areas of further support for the programmes of Quallo and his team.

“The ministry is singularly committed to providing the necessary resources to the constabulary force. We have been doing that, giving the resources, giving the policy support, giving the legislative support and we will continue doing that and redouble our efforts because all Jamaicans ... have to get all hands on deck.

“The Commissioner and I remain on the same page and we have one goal,” added Montague as he pointed journalists to Quallo for confirmation.

But the commissioner restricted his comments to, “I have no issues.”
