Sankar cane cutters accuse company of intimidation
Protesting cane cutters employed to Sankar Limited in St Thomas are accusing the company of intimidation.
This after the company brought in a mechanical cane cutter to harvest cane at the Golden Grove Sugar Factory.
Sankar has a contract with the sugar factory to undertake field operations at the estate.
Our news centre understands that the company plans to utilise more machinery to harvest the cane.
The workers say they are disappointed that Sankar has opted to go ahead and harvest the sugar cane instead of meeting with them to discuss their issues.
The cane cutters have been off the job in protest since last week Wednesday over what they say are poor working conditions.
The workers say the company called a meeting on that day but it never materialised and that there has been no further communication from the management.
They are renewing their call for a meeting.
