People must be main priority, stresses mayor
Mayor of Georgetown, Guyana, Patricia Chase Green urged councillors and other leaders to make sure that improving the lives of people is always the priority.
Chase Green was among a group of Caribbean mayors who addressed the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation's monthly meeting earlier this week. The mayors were also participants in the inaugural Conference of the Mayors, which was held at the University of the West Indies, Regional Headquarters in St Andrew.
Chase Green stressed that it was important that partnerships were made that would enhance living conditions and the welfare of the people.
"During the course of the conference, our theme is 'Honouring the Past, Embracing a Smart Future'. I pray God that as we sit every day in deliberations and make decisions, we will agree to disagree. Our main goal must be, at all times, the people," she said.
"Be sure to ask God for guidance in everything you do. No matter our differences as nations, we are one people, one nation, one destiny. We are actually coming from one tree, just many branches. We all have the same goals."
Joel Martinez, mayor of Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, urged Caribbean leaders to collaborate more in order to realise untapped potential.
"The Caribbean, for too long, has not tapped into the local government stream where we collaborate on a regular basis to develop our cities and our regions. We are seeing international markets and other unions collaborate, so the Caribbean should be no different," he declared.
