North Korea has announced plans to dismantle its nuclear test facilities in less than two weeks and says journalists from several foreign countries will be invited to observe the event.

The announcement comes three weeks before United States President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in a historic summit set to take place in Singapore.

North Korean state news agency, KCNA reported today that Pyongyang is taking "technical measures" to dismantle its nuclear sites between May 23 and 25, depending on weather conditions.

According to the KCNA, the dismantling of the Punggye-ri site will involve the collapsing of all tunnels through the use of explosives and the removal of all observation facilities, research buildings and security posts.

It says journalists from South Korea, China, the US, the United Kingdom and Russia will be invited to witness the event.

North Korea said the intention is to allow not only the local press but also journalists of other countries to conduct on-the-spot coverage in order to show, in a transparent manner, the dismantling of the northern nuclear test ground.

However, observers noted that there has been no mention of foreign experts being allowed access to the site.
