Charles Jr to participate in Windrush Generation anniversary conference in UK
State Minister with responsibility of Diaspora Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Pearnel Charles Jr. will be participating in the Jamaica Diaspora UK (JDUK) 6th Biennial Conference which commemorates the 70th anniversary of the Windrush Generation.
The conference is being held under the theme "Staying Power of the Windrush Generation”.
Charles' visit to the United Kingdom is his first since given the Diaspora Affairs portfolio two months ago.
Additionally, his engagement is significant as June 16 is celebrated worldwide as Diaspora Day.
During his week-long schedule of engagements in the UK, the State Minister is expected to address issues such as remedial action regarding the Windrush Generation, challenges of undocumented migrants, education, business, crime and other areas affecting the Diaspora.
Charles will hold talks with the Diaspora Advisory Board on policy issues and meet with UK government officials, critical stakeholders and engage youths in a rap session on issues affecting them.
It is anticipated that these series of engagements will facilitate the strengthening of the existing bilateral relationship with the UK and advance the engagement of the Diaspora.
In underscoring the significance of the meetings, he noted, “I am delighted that I will get the opportunity to address the community and respond to their queries. The Jamaican community in the UK is strong and vibrant and I hope to formulate a constructive relationship with them as we seek to serve their best interest,".
