Unbelievable! Taliban fighters, Afghan troops embrace amid ceasefire
In scenes that would have seemed impossible several days ago, Taliban fighters in Afghanistan have been captures in photographs and social media videos embracing members of the Afghan security forces during a three-day ceasefire called to mark the Muslim religious festival Eid.
The hugs and embraces were, however, marred by a suicide attack that killed 25 people, including members of the Taliban and local residents.
The Islamic State, which has been active in the area, has claimed responsibility for the attack, Reuters news agency reported.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani announced the ceasefire by government forces and called on the Taliban to do the same.
The government also released a number of Taliban militants from jail.
For many in Afghanistan, the show of camaraderie between Taliban fighters and Afghan security forces were extraordinary scenes and raised hopes of permanent peace in their war-ravaged country.
Just days ago, the two sides were engaged in fierce fighting.
