The Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) says it is steadfast in its strong support of the proposed ban on single-use plastic and styrofoam containers, arguing that this has very serious implications for small islands such as Jamaica whose economic development and food security are closely tied to the natural environment.

The Association says some of the effects of plastic pollution can already be seen; therefore urgent action is needed to halt the long-term effects on the environment and the food chain.

It further says plastic pollution also has grave implications for tourism and if it continues unchecked, the Jamaican tourism product as we know will be seriously undermined by the presence of plastics which have not been disposed of properly.

The JHTA, in its own efforts to encourage its members to carry out business in a manner which safeguards the environment introduced and awarded an Environmental Sustainability Award at the recently held Annual Awards Luncheon.

This award was won by the Jamaica Inn located in Ocho Rios.

The Association is appealing to businesses across the island to replace single-use plastic containers with biodegradable or reusable alternatives that are environmentally-friendly solutions to plastic cups, straws, and styrofoam.
