Two-time champions Argentina and their star player Lionel Messi were sent packing from the 2018 World Cup after a crushing 4-3 defeat to France.

France scored three goals in nine minutes early in the second half to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead before holding on to book their place in the quarter finals.

Antoine Griezmann’s penalty gave them the lead in the 13th minute, but this was cancelled out by a superb strike from Argentine midfielder Angel Di Maria in the 41st minute as the first half ended 1-1.

Argentina took the lead in the second half with a goal in the 48th minute by Gabriel Mercado.

But then came the three-goal blitz by the French team, starting with a sublime equaliser by Benjamin Pavard in the 57th minute.

Kylian Mbappe with two goals in the 64th and 68th minute gave France a 4-2 lead before a late consolation by Sergio Aguero in time added-on gave Argentina some hope of forcing extra time.
