Russia out of World Cup

Host country Russia are out of the 2018 World Cup after they were beaten 4-3 on penalties by Croatia in the last quarterfinal game.

The teams had played to a 2-2 draw after full and extra time.

The win ends a 20-year wait for Croatia to play in the semi final of the World Cup.

It also sets up a clash with England next week for the right to play in the final.

Russia opened the scoring in the 31minutes through Denis Cheryshev.

But Croatia was back on level terms eight minutes later through a strike by Andrej Kramaric.

Croatia grabbed the lead in the 10th minute of extra time through Domagoj Vida after both teams failed to break the deadlock in regulation time.

But with five minutes to go before the end of extra time Mario Fernandes scored to force penalties.

Fernandes was one of the two Russian players to miss penalties.
