Single-lane restriction along Griffin Gully Bridge

The National Works Agency (NWA) is reminding motorists that only a single lane of traffic is currently allowed to use the Griffin Gully Bridge in St Andrew at any one time.

The bridge, which is located along the Papine to Redlight roadway and is used to access the community of Newcastle, is being reconstructed. The restriction is to facilitate the completion of the works.

Acting manager, communication and customer services at the NWA, Ramona Lawson, explained that concrete was recently poured to complete the expansion of the box culvert, and the requisite time has to be allowed for curing in order to ensure the integrity of the structure.

She said the next 12 to 13 days are critical, during which motor vehicles should not drive over the section of newly poured concrete.

Wide vehicles, which may have a difficulty remaining within the lane designated for use, should not attempt to cross the bridge. There is, however, no weight restriction for motor vehicles using the structure.

The NWA said the box culvert at Griffin Gully is being reconstructed with a wider span so as to adequately accommodate the passage of large vehicles. After the section is sufficiently cured, additional concrete works will be done, including the construction of parapet and wing walls to deliver the overall project.

The works, which are being funded through the Tourism Enhancement Fund at a cost of $16 million, are also aimed at improving drainage in the area.
