A Jamaica Labour Party Councillor is now in custody following an altercation with an elderly man in Montego Bay, St James yesterday, the police have confirmed.

The councillor’s name is being withheld.

The police say his licensed firearm has been confiscated and he is to be questioned by investigators in the presence of his attorney.

Police sources also revealed that after the councillor was taken into custody investigators discovered that a warrant was issued for his arrest by the Family Court last October.

Law enforcement sources say investigators are now probing his assertion that the warrant was vacated last November after he attended court.

According to the police, the councillor was walking along Union Street when the 65-year-old man called out to him.

The police and eyewitnesses alleged that the councillor responded with some derogatory words.

It’s reported that the man told him the same derogatory words following which the councillor allegedly pulled his licensed firearm and used it to beat the 65-year-old in his head.

The police say the elderly man made a report to the Freeport Police Station where the politician was arrested when he turned saying he wanted to report an incident.
