Deputy Mayor of Kingston Councillor Winston Ennis says the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation is conducting investigations to identify vendors in need of general and emergency assistance arising from the fire at a section of the Coronation Market, affectionately called "Ray Ray Ground", in downtown, Kingston.

In a statement, Ennis said the exercise is being lead by corporation's disaster coordinator in collaboration with the City Engineer's Department.

The entire market was destroyed by the blaze yesterday.

Ennis said the municipal corporation will be working to have the market restored as quickly as possible.

He also assured that it will continue to do its part to expedite the repairs to all markets that have been affected by fires.

According to the deputy mayor, Tuesday's blaze was the second fire in nine months and follows a series of fires that have been set to markets owned and operated by the municipal corporation since the start of year.

“Repairs have already started on Redemption Arcade and Papine Market. Plans have been tabled to experiment with a variety of mitigating equipment including fire sprinklers in markets and CCTV cameras with real-time monitoring," Ennis said.

“The [corporation] is appealing to citizens to allow the authorities to complete their investigations unimpeded,” he added.
