Local Government and Community Development Month 2018 will have its official launch today at the Claude Stuart Park in Port Maria, St Mary, with Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie and Dr Christopher Tufton, health minister, as guest speakers.

The event starts at 10 a.m.

Being observed under the theme 'Protecting the Vulnerable, Establishing Hope Through Local Governance', the ministry, during the month, will seek to highlight the importance of local government to national development.

Speaking earlier this month at the launch of the Cross-Island Run in celebration of the month, McKenzie said local government is one of the most important drivers of economic activities, with responsibilities covering roads, markets, parks, infirmaries and building plans.

One of the highlights of the month will be an open day at the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development on November 20, where people will be able to learn about the ministry.

Youth councils and youth mayors will also be chosen during the month. Youth mayors for each parish will be allocated $500,000 to complete a sustainable project during their tenure. Infirmaries across the island, inclusive of matrons' quarters, will also be the focus of attention during the month, along with several other activities.
