Police warn protesting taxi drivers against illegal activities

The police are cautioning taxi operators who have been protesting amendments to the Road Traffic Bill to desist from blocking roadways and threatening and intimidating other road users.

"It has been noted that the protesters, who have staged demonstrations across the island over the past three days, have used their vehicles to block roadways, preventing other road users from going about their lawful business and, in some instances, have disallowed commuters from accessing other modes of transportation," the police said in a statement.

According to the police, there have also been reports of threats of violence to other operators who do not wish to protest.

The police are reminding these taxi operators that while the Constitution makes provisions for peaceful demonstrations, same must be carried out responsibly.

The police are calling for the leadership of the taxi associations and the demonstrators to "review their actions and not infringe on the rights of other members of the public."

"It is the intention of the police to enforce the law and anyone who commits an offence will be prosecuted," the police underscored.
