JGRA, Rubis in impasse over contract termination
The Jamaica Gasolene Retailers Association (JGRA) is seeking the government’s intervention in an impasse with petroleum marketing company Rubis Energy Jamaica Limited.
In a statement today, the JGRA said its members are now restive and are prepared to take action.
The association said at the centre of the row is the termination of the contract of a long time dealer at short notice and without consideration of exit compensation.
JGRA president Gregory Chung told The Gleaner that the dealer was given a letter dated October 31 instructing that he must vacate the service station within two months.
The JGRA said, despite its efforts, Rubis has indicated that it has no intention to reverse its decision.
It described the company's stance as unfair and callous.
The association further said that it also takes issue with remarks made by a senior member of the marketing company about the dealer who it said spoke up for compensation for motorists who were affected by the bad gas saga in 2015.
According to the JGRA, the dealer is being victimised for his stance.
“Rubis has shown blatant disregard for established industry customs and practices and outright contempt for JGRA members and their employees,” the association contended.
“We are calling for the government to intervene and carry out an audit into the operations of Rubis Energy Jamaica Limited,” the JGRA added.
