UPDATE: The latest after baby stolen from Victoria Jubilee Hospital
Sinclair Hutton, the father of the baby who was this morning stolen from the Victoria Jubilee Hospital is adamant that there was a conspiracy between the culprit and staff members.
The baby was delivered nine hours before he was discovered missing.
The hospital administration has admitted that there was a security breach, as the guard who should have been at the entrance to the ward was not present at the time the child disappeared.
What happened
About 4:30 a.m., 46-year-old Suzette Whyte left her baby on the bed to take a bath as she was soiled.
On her way to the shower, she reportedly passed a woman dressed in a multi-coloured blouse and jeans skirt, looking through a window.
The woman is reported to have told Whyte her not to worry about the soiled floor as it would be cleaned up.
Whyte reported that on her return from the bathroom, only the baby’s hat was seen on the bed.
The baby and the woman were missing.
"This totally strange to me," said Hutton.
"It seems like it’s an inside job because at that time it’s not a visiting hour and the security say dem nuh see nobody with no baby."
He said security guards have since searched the mother's belongings, accusing her of selling the baby.
How the mother is coping
Whyte, who lost a baby shortly after delivery two years ago, said she has been left dejected by the disappearance of her newborn
She desperately wanted to have another baby to heal the hurt.
Whyte, the mother of one other child, is questioning how someone could steal her baby from a secure ward.
"Me nuh see how somebody fi come inna the hospital and tief somebody baby and no security nuh see when them a come out,” she said.
The hospital’s take
CEO of the Victoria Jubilee Hospital Colleen Wright has admitted that there was a security breach.
She said reports indicate that there was no security guard at the entrance to the ward at the time the baby went missing.
Wright said by the end of the week, security cameras will be installed at the maternity wards.
"Security is something you must constantly be looking at as to how it can be upgraded, you cannot take anything for granted. We think that we have security measures in place because we have the armbands, we have discharge slips and we have security manning the floor and the entrance yet something still happened," the CEO stated.
The hospital is now urging mothers to contact a nurse or a patient care representative to stay with their babies if they need to use the restroom.
Only recently, the Victoria Jubilee expressed satisfaction following a review of its security system after a child was stolen from the Cornwall Regional Hospital.
How you can help
The father of the missing child is urging people to report any suspicion to the police.
No pictures are available of the baby who was stolen nine hours after delivery.
"If you know of anybody that lost a baby and miraculously have a baby now, contact the nearest police station, please," Hutton begged.
