Construction begins tomorrow on new classrooms at Fair Prospect Primary
Termite infested classrooms to be demolished
Construction work to build two replacement classrooms at Fair Prospect Primary School in Portland will begin tomorrow. This was agreed on last Wednesday during a meeting to officially hand over the site to the contractors, C & D Construction and Engineering Company Limited. The contract, valued at approximately $12 million, will run for three months and was awarded in keeping with the Government of Jamaica procurement guidelines.
Under the contract, an existing termite-infested classroom block will be demolished and replaced with a new, two-classroom concrete block. The contract also involves the replacement of windows on a second building which houses several classrooms.
Last Wednesday’s meeting was attended by the member of parliament for the area, Dr Lynvale Bloomfield school representatives, members of the Japanese Embassy, parents, community representatives, Ministry of Education, Youth and Information representatives, and representatives from the National Education Trust, which will be overseeing the project.
The construction and renovation works are being funded by a grant from the Japanese Embassy in Jamaica, under the Japan Grassroots Human Security Project, valued at $11.4 million.
Managing Director of C & D Construction Clive Wint assured stakeholders that the completed project would be handed over by the end of April 2019. Regular site meetings will be held with all stakeholders to provide updates on the progress of the project.
While thanking the National Education Trust for getting the work started, members of the community promised to work with the contractor to ensure the project is completed quickly and without incident.
