MANDEVILLE, Manchester:

The Manchester Peace Coalition (MPC), in acknowledging the importance of family and helping those who have lost their main breadwinner, will on Saturday host a pre-Valentine’s Day show.

Having made a commitment to the daughter of slain Manchester police, Corporal Melvin Smith, who was shot and killed while pursuing robbers, Dr Clifton Reid, founder and chairman of the MPC, told The Gleaner that most of the proceeds will go towards her secondary education.

“He was a member of the Manchester Peace Coalition. He literally held our hand through its inception. He was well loved by everybody. Even more so, he loved his family. His wife and his daughter were the apple of his eye and he did everything he could to give them a good life. We know he wanted the best for his daughter, as a dedicated family man. We have pledged to supporting this brilliant mind through high school.”

Reid added that they have also adopted communities and there is a plan to launch a foundation.

“It is our hope to launch the Melvin Smith’s Foundation with Northern Caribbean University, the neighbourhood watch, the police and MPC. This foundation will be geared towards assisting families, with emphasis on educating the children of slain police personnel,” he said

Reid said part proceeds from the event will also go towards a local charity and two children’s home.

“The event is a wonderful opportunity for families to come together to help family. We have a Kiddie’s Village, we’re having two 20/20 cricket matches in the day, and we have managed to get George Nooks and Pam Hall as the main acts.”
