Campbell ... I regret the interpretation that has been taken and therefore withdraw the statement.

St Ann North West Member of Parliament Dr Dayton Campbell has withdrawn a controversial statement he made at a People's National Party (PNP) mass rally in Port Antonio, Portland on Sunday.

Campbell had asserted that the killing of Portland Eastern Member of Parliament Dr Lynvale Bloomfield was political.

In a statement to Political Ombudsman Donna Parchment Brown today, Campbell said his comments were regretted.

"I regret the interpretation that has been taken and therefore withdraw the statement," Dr Campbell said.

He also said it was not intended to cause offence or ascribe blame to anyone.

"I am not aware of who is responsible for the gruesome murder of Dr Bloomfield and I was not attempting to make any allegations," Campbell was quoted as saying in a statement released by the People's National Party (PNP).

Campbell said he wanted to motivate Comrades to go out and work to return the seat to the PNP in the upcoming by-election.

The by-election will be held on April 4.
